The police yesterday charged a street hawker, Arinze Okemiri, before an Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrate’s Court, over alleged attempted murder and arson.
The defendant, who has no fixed address is facing three-count charge bordering on arson, attempted murder and causing grievous harm.
The prosecutor, Emmanuel Ajayi, told the court that the defendant who hawks sun glasses had on July 20, at about 4p.m., attempted to burn down shop 19/21 Balogun street, in Lagos Island, belonging to one Malachi Ezeoke, by setting it on fire after wetting it with petrol.
Ajayi, further informed the court that the defendant while attempting to set ablaze the two shops, also caused bodily harm to the shop owner, Ezeoke, by setting fire on his two legs.
The offences according to the prosecutor, are punishable under sections 340(1)(2) 228(1)(2) and 234 of the criminal laws of Lagos state of Nigeria, 2011.
The defendant however pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
The defendant’s lawyer, Mr. Oladele S. O. urged the court to admit him to bail in the most liberal term.
Consequently, Magistrate Olajuwon admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N400,000, with two sureties in like sum.
The magistrate also ordered that the addresses and means of livelihood of the sureties must be verified by the court’s prosecutor and adjourned the matter till September 23, for mention.
