Parents urged not to post photos of children on Facebook

German police have urged parents not to post photos of their children on Facebook and other social media sites - warning they could prove dangerous or simply embarrassing.

Officers in Hagen said a "snapshot on the beach or (a picture of) nude bathing in the paddling pool" shared with a few friends and family on social media can become quickly visible across the internet.
The police campaign warned the harmless images can have serious consequences - being accessed and redistributed by paedophiles or found in years to come by school bullies.
They also pointed out that while the parents may find the images sweet, the child is likely to find the photos highly embarrassing as they get older.
The Facebook appeal has been shared almost 200,000 times since it was first posted on Tuesday.
"The internet forgets nothing," the police wrote, while urging social media users to go a step beyond tightening their online security settings.
The officers said it was "much more beautiful" for proud parents to enjoy sharing images of their friends and loved ones in person.
