Fifa's top 10 goals of the year revealed

A League One striker will face off against international footballing superstars like Lionel Messi, Carlos Tevez and Carli Lloyd for Fifa's coveted Goal of the Year prize

The shortlist for the annual Puskás Award will see Fleetwood Town's David Ball vie for the title with his neat chip in March, securing a 1-1 draw against Preston.
Speaking to the Fleetwood website, Ball said he was "delighted".
It’s great for that goal to even be put in the same bracket as the ones which have been shortlisted.
I’m obviously shocked to have been shortlisted and it’s a great thing for Fleetwood Town and myself. The likes of Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messi are people I love watching. To be in the same category as them is something I’ll cherish forever.
– DAVID BALL, FLEETWOOD TOWN
The winner will be chosen via a public vote.
The Fifa’s Puskás Award final 10:
  • David Ball (Fleetwood Town)
Fleetwood Town v Preston North End, League One (England): March 29, 2015
The aptly-named Ball neatly side-stepped a Preston defender and, anticipating the incoming tackle, went for broke.
The football sailed gracefully over the heads of most of the Preston squad, before nestling decisively in the top left corner of the net.
  • Gonzalo Castro (Real Sociedad)
Real Sociedad v Deportivo de la Coruña, La Liga (Spain): April 12, 2015
After a clean pass from one of his teammates, Castro nailed a high volley to score - and despite the close angle, the goalkeeper could barely get a glove to it in time.
  • Alessandro Florenzi (Roma)
Roma v Barcelona, Champions League: September 16, 2015
Bring run onto the sidelines by a defender, Florenzi blasted an almost impossibly perfect long shot from just inside the halfway line.
The goalkeeper had left his box, not anticipating danger - and despite a frantic sprint back when he realised where the ball was headed, it was already in the net before he even got close.
  • Wendell Lira (Goianesia)
Atletico-GO v Goianesia, Campeonato Goiano (Brazil): March 11, 2015
A neat chip-shot over the defenders from his teammate cleared the initial danger, and Lira was ready with a nimble half-bicycle kick to pass the final hurdle.
By the time he hit the ground, the ball was firmly at the back of the net.
  • Carli Lloyd (USA)
USA v Japan, Women’s World Cup final: July 5, 2015
Already one of the most famous goals in women's football history, Lloyd booted the ball from the halfway line.
Despite the Japan goalie desperately running backwards to try to intercept the shot, it was too late - and a last-ditch leap backwards failed to stop what was a stunning goal for the US.
  • Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona, Copa del Rey (Spain): May 30, 2015
In an incredible show of skill, Messi outwitted four defenders who dared to try to stop him, sealing the deal with an unstoppable bullet of a kick to the bottom right corner.
  • Philippe Mexes (AC Milan)
Milan v Inter, Friendly: July 25, 2015
No messing around here - Mexes was ready and waiting for his teammates' corner kick, slamming the ball directly into the net from the outskirts of the penalty box.
  • Marcel Ndjeng (SC Paderborn)
SC Paderborn v Bolton Wanderers, Friendly: July 13, 2014
It seemed all was lost as Bolton warded off one attack, but Ndjeng had other ideas.
Intercepting a header pass, he booted the ball from near the halfway line, placing it just beyond the goalkeeper's reach.
  • Esteban Ramírez (Herediano)
Herediano v Deportivo Saprissa, Primera Division (Costa Rica): November 2, 2014
It seemed Ramírez was playing all by himself to set up this one.
Receiving a high pass on his chest, he then headed the ball into a better position before making the ultimate shot.
  • Carlos Tevez (Juventus)
Juventus v Parma, Serie A (Italy): November 9, 2014
After a direct run from beyond the halfway line, Tevez dodged a total of three defenders before placing the ball neatly in the net.
It happened so quickly, the goalie barely had time to move.
