community-shield-arsenal-chelsea_1n7oc142fuzo21lqvdgl02n4ayAhead of the kick-off of the 2015/2016 English Premier season, BBC Africa has done a study on how big English clubs are in African countries and found that Arsenal are No.1 in Nigeria, at least on Twitter.

The study, which uses the clubs’ Twitter followers on the continent as a point of reference, concentrated on the big English clubs Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool.
The research was carried out by Twitter and gives a fair idea, taking the total number of people in each country who follow official Twitter accounts of Premier League teams, and then breaking those figures down to give percentages for each team.
According to the report, Chelsea are the most popular club in West Africa, but Arsenal edge the Blues in Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria.
Arsenal have 26 per cent of the fans in Nigeria, closely followed by Chelsea with 25 per cent. Manchester United are third with 18 per cent.
The Gunners are also the most popular club in East and North Africa, while Manchester United have the most Twitter fans in Southern Africa.
Globally, Arsenal have the most fans on Twitter with just over six million, followed by Chelsea with close to six million. United, who joined Twitter only after Sir Alex Ferguson’s exit in 2013 and are two pr three years behind their rivals, have 200,000 followers fewer than Chelsea.

@ChelseaFC – 5.92m
@ManUtd – 5.73m
@LFC – 4.64m
