Two Crushed to Death at Police Checkpoint

Two persons have died, while others were injured after a Sports Utility Vehicle rammed into a tricycle at the Iyana School bus stop in the Igando area of Lagos State. 

Punch Metro learnt that the SUV also hit a commercial bus which in turn crashed into another tricycle, killing the driver on the spot.

The accident, which occurred at about 5pm on Saturday, was said to have happened while policemen from the Igando division stopped the tricycle driver and were allegedly extorting money from him.

It was learnt that the SUV, which was speeding, hit the tricycle and also hit a commercial bus 
damaging the screens.

The bus was said to have hit another tricycle, killing the rider.

Another victim was said to have died in the commercial bus.Policemen from the Igando division reportedly took the corpses to a morgue while the other injured persons were rushed to the Igando General Hospital.

A motorist, identified only as Emmanuel, who was an eyewitness, said it was the third accident at the bus stop in the week.

He said:

“The accident was caused by some policemen who were searching tricycles at the junction.
“They normally extort money from the drivers. So, they stopped the tricycle, and were in the process of extorting money from him when the incident occured.
“An SUV rammed into the tricycle and a commercial bus. The bus in turn hit another tricycle, killing the driver.
“The accident caused gridlock in the area as rescuers tried to pull out victims who were trapped in the bus. On the spot, we saw two corpses including the tricycle driver. This would be the third accident at the bus stop this week due to the police’s overbearing attitude.”
Punch learnt that among the victims rushed to the hospital was a pregnant woman.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, could not yet be reached for comment.
