The Lagos State Government says 67 villages, which have been in darkness for about 35 years in the Lekki area, will be electrified by December, 2015.
The government added that it would light up the expressway from Berger to the Lagos Island, and from Ikorodu to the Lagos Island during the same period.
The Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Energy, Deji Williams, said this at a news conference in Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday, adding that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had approved the projects.
Williams said, “A team from the state electricity board is currently studying the architectural drawings of the roads to ascertain the number of streetlights needed to light up the stretch of road from Berger to Island and from Ikorodu to Island.
“Most of the streetlights will be connected to the existing Independent Power Projects to reduce the operational expenses.
“We expect that jobs will be created because the private sectors will be involved in the maintenance of the streetlights. It will be completed by December, 2015.”
The acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Taofik Fashola, said the electrification of the road from Berger to the Lagos Island would be undertaken in the first phase, while that of the Ikorodu to Lagos Island would be done in the second phase.
He added that the lighting up of the 67 villages would be the third phase of the project.
Head of Power, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ibilola Kasumu, said the 67 villages to be lit up had been in darkness for about 35 years.
“The villages are from the Ibeju Lekki junction down to Ode Omi. They will have electricity before the end of the year,
