Highway sweeper knocked to death in Lagos

A highway sweeper working with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority on Wednesday died when a vehicle knocked her off the Third Mainland Bridge to the ground.

A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria who was at the scene of the accident reports that the sweeper was hit when the vehicle had a burst tyre.
The accident occurred at about 11 a.m. behind Kam Salem House, the Police Headquarters annex at Obalende.
The driver of the vehicle, a military personnel, was said to be speeding when his tyre burst and the vehicle somersaulted several times.
The victim, according to witnesses was flung into the air and thrown over the bridge to the ground.
The unconscious military personnel was taken to the nearby Military Hospital in Ikoyi in a tricycle, popularly known as “Keke Marwa’’ by his colleagues.
The victim, who was identified as Bisi by her colleagues, was said to be a dutiful worker who loved her job with passion in spite of the little salary she earned.
An official of Lagos State Transport Management Authority, who spoke anonymously, confirmed to NAN that the owner of the Peugeot 407 car was on high speed when the tyre burst.
As at the time of this report, the mangled body of the victim was covered with cellophane wrapping and cloth while her colleague awaited their managers to arrive at the scene.
