The player retrieved a gun from his bag after being shown a straight red before returning to the pitch and shooting the official during the game in Cordoba, central Argentina on Tuesday, according to local reports.
The victim, named locally as 48-year-old César Flores, suffered gunshot wounds to his head, chest and neck.
Another player is believed to have been injured but is out of immediate danger.
Police have launched a huge manhunt to find the attacker, who has not been named.
A police spokesperson told the Efe news agency:
It all happened during the football match.
We don’t know [exactly what took place], but it appears the player was angry, fetched a gun and killed him.
