Lawyer docked for N3.4m fraud in Calabar

A lawyer, Mr. Ezechi Okereke, has been arraigned in the Federal High Court, Calabar, Cross River State, for allegedly defrauding one Mr. Enwono-Abasi Emmanuel Eyo of N3, 450, 000.

In a case with suit number FHC/CA/CR33/2015 dated July 8, 2015 and signed by the prosecuting counsel of the zone six police headquarters Calabar, Okereke was charged for failing to honour an agreement which bordered on land transaction with Eyo between January to June 2014.
According to the charge sheet obtained by our reporter, the accused had entered into a transaction to sell a plot of land located at Satellite Town, Calabar, he claimed was allotted to him by the Federal Ministry of Land and Housing.
Other documents presented before the court showed that the complainant was instructed to pay the sum of N1, 750, 000 to the Federal Ministry of Land to enable the ministry release the allocation papers and N1, 700, 000 in four installments to Okereke
Having failed to allot the plot of land within the period of agreement, the police arraigned the lawyer before the court for offence contrary to section 1(a) (b) and 2, 3 of the Advance Fee Fraud.
The charge sheet reads: “The Inspector General of Police charges you Ezechi Okereke ‘m’ that between January to June 2014 within the jurisdiction of this honourable court by false pretences and with intent to defraud obtained the sum of N3, 450, 000.00 from Mr. Enwono-Abasi Emmanuel Eyo ‘m’.
“This was by false pretences to enable you release allotment paper for a plot of land situate at Satellite Town Calabar, allotted to you by the Federal Ministry of Lands and Housing, Calabar, a representation you know to be false as you have no plot of land to allot him and thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under section 1(a)(b) and 2, 3 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other related (Offences) Act Cap D11 Vol. 2 laws of the federation of Nigeria 2006.”
