Kelechi Iheanacho is set to be rewarded with a place in Manchester City’s Champions League squad this week after departing Villa Park with a signed matchball.
Iheanacho’s progress this season has been remarkable and the teenage striker is emerging as the great hope of the £200million Etihad Campus, on course to become City’s first homegrown talent since Micah Richards.
The Nigerian’s hat-trick underlined exactly why manager Manuel Pellegrini raised £28million by selling Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic and it seems certain he will be available for Europe in February.
After being interviewed by City’s official TV station on Saturday he walked back to the dressing room to be serenaded by his team-mates. He has all the attributes for the Premier League and Pellegrini has admitted he is enjoying the best education possible.
A place on the bench beckons at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday, however.
“Working every day with players like Sergio Aguero is very important for him,” said Pellegrini. “That’s why I decided to keep him here last season, rather than send him out on loan, because he wanted to play every day with all those players. That’s why we went for the work permit and said he was a different player and would be important to the team
