Former Nigeria international Jonathan Akpoborie has slammed the Samson Siasia-led U-23 team and insisted that the side does not deserve to be tagged ‘Dream Team’, because they have not done enough to earn it.
The side will tackle Algeria in a decisive U-23 AFCON Group B game in the on-going U-23AFCON in Dakar, Senegal today; the game which will also determine the side’s fate in the tourney, which also doubles as the Rio 2016 Olympics.
According to Akpoborie, the first U-23 team who won gold at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic football event were, indeed, a ‘Dream Team’.

“I think that name ‘Dream Team’ should no more be applied to our U23 team. No malicious or ill feelings [but] I just believe you need to earn that name.
“I was privileged to be in the first U-23 team, with Daniel ‘Da Bull’ Amokachi, Kanu Nwankwo ‘Papillo’, Austin ‘JJ’ Okocha, Taribo West, Sunday Oliseh, Celestine Babayaro, Emmanuel Amuneke and Uche Okechukwu ‘De Gentle Giant’. That was a dream team.
That team was so good. There were also, Tijjani Babangida, Victor Ikpeba ‘The Prince of Monaco’, Joseph Dosu, Wilson Oruma and a host of others.”
In Senegal, Siasia’s team have laboured, particularly, in the second half of their first two group games against Mali and Egypt.
