Hundreds of people are promoting and recruiting for the Islamic State from within the United States, according to a new study.
Academics said they have identified about 300 individuals who were actively promoting the terror group online and could be traced to locations within the US.
"Several thousand" other Americans were also identified as "consumers" of Isis propaganda, according to the study from George Washington University's Program on Extremism.
Isis has embraced the internet as a propaganda tool which they have used to draw in and radicalism sympathisers.
Twitter is the "platform of choice" for the majority of US-based Isis supporters, though they also use Facebook, Google+ and Tumblr along with private messaging apps such as Kik and surespot, the study found.
Attempts to ban propagandists were relatively futile, as once banned they simply set up new accounts and were usually active again "within hours", the study found.
