The man identified as 28-year-old Paul Niles was riding a bicycle around 7:30pm when the 26-year-old unidentified female jogger passed by at the East River Park near Cherry Street. He then tried to talk to her but she ran in the opposite direction.
Niles chased and grabbed her by her hair and throat then dragged her to the amphitheater by the park’s Grand Street footbridge, where he raped her.
When he was done, the suspect stole the victim’s credit card and fled the scene. The victim was taken to Beth Israel Hospital, where she was treated and released.
The suspect was however identified and caught when police released videos that show him using the victim’s credit card at a machine in a nearby store.
