NFF cancels match bonuses for cadet teams

Cash-strapped Nigeria Football Federation, (NFF), has revealed that it has abolished match bonuses for all of the nation’s male and female cadet teams, including the recently victorious U-17 side who clinched the World U-17 championship for a record fifth time.
Speaking yesterday via a television programme monitored in Abuja, NFF president, Amaju Pinnick, admitted that the football federation’s poor finances, caused by the economic down-turn, has made it impossible to continue with payment of bonuses to players and officials of the nation’s cadet teams.
The other affected teams include the U-17 female team, the Flamingoes, as well as the U-13 and U-15 national teams, both male and female.
“The players of these national teams will no longer be entitled to match bonuses, because of lack of funds caused by the economic downturn in the country.
“Funding has been very, very difficult to come by for the federation,” restated the NFF boss, who described as “speculation” news making the rounds that some of the national teams will be scraped because of the cash crunch.
The NFF has budgeted more than N7bn for 2016, with most of the cash coming from the government’s coffers.
The nation’s football administrator still owes the U-17 World champions, the Golden Eaglets, some of their bonuses for winning FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, according to the general secretary of the NFF, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi.
