Nigerian students have been urged to rise up and challenge members of the ruling class, who are bent on taking the entire country for a ride with their corrupt practices.
The call was made by the Executive Director, Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Reverend David Ugolor, at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) penultimate week.
It was at a programme tagged: “FEDx UNIBEN” organised by the Secretary of the institution’s Students’ Union, Emmanuel Ndueche at the Akin Deko Main Auditorium of the university.
The theme was: “Breaking from the Norm.” While welcoming the guests, the convener, Ndueche said the aim of the programme was primarily to open the eyes of the students to break away from the normal routine of going to school, graduating with good grades, getting a good job, marry and then die.
“We need to start using our God-given talents to effect positive change in our environment,” he said. According to Ugolor, in his remarks, he said across the world, the onus is now on the students to engage the political class in ensuring proper management of the national wealth and implementation of the fiscal budget as well as advocate for their rights, but which is sadly not so in our clime.
He said the students have the potential to bring about positive change in the polity, given the required adequate knowledge, even as the cleric added that the pivotal role of the students and youth in making positive change possible is the reason why his non-governmental organsiation decided to partner the students to tackle corruption in the country. His words: “We cannot afford to be silent in the face of the worrisome level of corruption in the country.
Therefore, we call on the students to partner with us so that together, we can set Nigeria free from all sorts of corrupt practices.”
