2 feared dead in Imo building collapse

At least two persons were feared dead last weekend as a two-storey building under construction collapsed at Okwu Umuoma, Nekede, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.

An eyewitness said about five workers, including the dead, were working in the building at the time of the collapse.
“About five persons were working in the building before it came crashing. I can also recall that the two dead workers were trapped for several hours in the rubble,” the witness recounted.
According to him, while three of the workers were quickly and safely evacuated from the disaster zone and taken to an undisclosed hospital, the two unlucky ones, however, died before help could reach them.
Although the eyewitness did not want to be dragged into giving reasons for the building collapsed, some others blamed the incident on poor quality materials used for the construction.
One of the respondents alleged that the owner of the ill-fated building lived overseas and instructed his relations to superintend the construction of the house.
