The battle for the Bayelsa State governorship seat took a dramatic turn on Sunday as former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience suddenly withdrew support for Gov Seriake-Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party, reports NewsDay.
Jonathan and his wife have allegedly given their backing to one of th All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Timi Alaible.
Alaibe in one of the 18 governorship aspirants on the platform of the APC.
The APC governorship primary election is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, September 22.
Jonathan’s dumping of Dickson for a second term in office is not unconnected with his belief that the re-election of the governor may spell doom for the former first family’s quest to control Bayelsa politics.
Jonathan’s support for Alaibe is a fall back strategy by the former President and his wife to forestall any possible persecution and to remain politically relevant in case the APC rigs out the PDP, through the use of federal might in the election.
Jonathan had earlier expressed fears that should the APC take over the state, he would have to go on exile for fear of being persecuted by the APC-led government in Bayelsa State.
Jonathan and his wife were reported to have met with Alaibe on Sunday at their Otuoke country home to discuss how to protect Jonathan’s interest in case the APC wins.
