National News Headlines-25/1/2016


1. Report has it that the Divisional Police Officer of Vunokilang Police Station in Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Okozie Okereofor, and some policemen attached to him as well as 60 villagers were killed on Sunday when suspected Fulani herdsmen, attacked four communities in the local government area.

2. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has raised fresh 22 charges against ex-Niger Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, otherwise known as Tompolo, and 12 others. The charges filed on Friday at a Federal High Court in Lagos, bordered on stealing, advanced fee fraud and money laundering to the tune of N22,765,900,000.


3. The Nigerian Navy has disclosed that it has discovered an illegal oil bunkering site at the government-owned Ship Builders Yard facility in Port Harcourt. Leading newsmen to the illegal site on Sunday, Commodore Sanusi Ibrahim, the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, Port Harcourt, said five suspects were arrested at the scene.


4.Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha has been condemned by former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, the dismissal of over 3,000 workers by his government, terming the action as most reckless, insensitive and completely lacking in economic sense. Chief Ihedioha reacted through his media aide, Mr. Chibuike Onyeukwu. He also condemned the scrapping of 19 government parastatals, agencies and departments.


5. The Federal Government, weekend, removed subsidy from Kerosene and the product is now sold at N83 per litre from the earlier N50 per litre. The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA , in its product pricing template released, weekend, equally stressed that the N83 per litre price applies only to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), invariably, other petrol stations and dealers now have the freedom to sell at their own rates.

6. The Federal Government, weekend, urged Ijaw communities in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area, Delta State, where crude oil and gas pipelines were continuously bombed some weeks ago, to hand over to the security operatives, perpetrators of the bomb attack believed to be hiding in their areas. The order came through the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina.


7. There was tension at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, Delta State, weekend two suspected Lassa fever patients died in four days. The development made patients and nurses to flee the hospital. Report claims that some determined health workers tried their best to remove the bodies of the two patients, who reportedly died of the disease.


8. Rivers State Police Command has debunked reports at some quarters that it arraigned some pro-Biafran protesters before a Magistrate’s Court half naked. The command dismissed even the pictures published by some media organizations, saying it was malicious and deceitful, adding that the force cannot manhandle suspects.


9. Head coach of Guinea, Mohammed Kanfory Bangoura, has waved aside threat by the Super Eagles ahead of their Group C final game on Tuesday at the Stade Muganda in Rwanda. According to coach Bangoura, his players are not inferior to the Super Eagles and they are likely to get a good result which will put them in the next round.


10. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Femi Falana, has asked the International Criminal Court to investigate the allegation of diversion of the $2.1bn arms funds by a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), and some military and public officials. Falana also urged the ICC to investigate those who diverted the funds meant for the strengthening of the country’s security forces. This is contained in a petition he sent to the Prosecutor of the ICC, Fatou Bensouda
