Tension mounts in Edo over impeachment plot

Political tension is heightened in Edo State over rumoured plans by the Edo State House of Assembly to impeach the deputy governor, Pius Odubu, on Monday
It was gathered that the impeachment plot was a reaction against the governorship ambition of the deputy governor in this year 2016 gubernatorial election.
The state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had in the past weeks been embroiled in crisis over the alleged anointing of Godwin Obaseki, chairman, Edo State Economic Team, as the governorship candidate of the party by the state governor, Adams Oshiomhole.
The crisis has led to the suspension and counter-suspension of top members from the party in the state.
Among those allegedly suspended were Gentleman Amegor, state deputy chairman, who also doubled as the Edo South Senatorial leader, and Henry Idahiagbon, the state attorney-general and commissioner for justice.
The alleged plan to impeach the deputy governor was said to have been perfected by lawmakers in Asaba, the Delta State capital, where they had their induction course.
Although, Victor Edoror, speaker of the House, had denied the impeachment plot, it was gathered that two out of the 24 lawmakers had signed the impeachment notice.
It was gathered that the embattled deputy governor would be given opportunity to resign or face impeachment.
It was further gathered that the state governor, Adams Oshiomhole, as part of plans to truncate his deputy to succeed him, was sponsoring the alleged impeachment plot.
