Gas tanker truck fire kills over 100 people in Nnewi

A gas tanker has exploded at a crowded industrial plant in Nigeria, leaving more than 100 people feared dead.

The disaster happened on Thursday as residents in Nnewi - a predominantly Christian community in south-east Nigeria - were rushing to refill their gas cylinders in time for Christmas.
An Associated Press reporter counted more than 100 bodies after firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control.
"The fire exploded like a bomb, and the whole gas station went up in thick, black smoke amidst an explosion from cooking gas cylinders," witness Emeka Peters said.
He said the fire broke out at around 11am and went on to rage for hours.
"Many of them were burned beyond recognition, and I doubt if many family members of the dead victims would be able to identify the remains of their loved ones", he added
